Tapeworm Flashcards
tapeworm parasite general morphology
dorsoventrally flattened
bilaterally symmetrical
segmented worms
-proglottids containing reproductive organs of both sexes
solid body without a body cavity made of parenchyma
obligate indirect life cycle
-eggs passed in feces of DH and ingested by IH
based on predator-prey relationship
-high host specificity of DH and specificity of IH
cyclophyllidaian tapeworms
distinguished by rostellum at apical end of scolex
-hooked and non hooked
5 primary families
taeniid tapeworms
scolex w hooked rostellum & 4 muscular suckers
metacestode stage ineffective to DH
taenia sp
different species w specific host parasite associations
eggs morphologically identical
proglottids square, wider than long one pore
cysticercosis
disease resulting from encysted metacestode stage in IH
1st indication pet has tapeworms
proglottids in feces
dog/cat tapeworm treatment/ prevention
no clinical signs
anticestodal drugs
-increase calcium permeability w/ loss of intracellular calcium and damage tegument structure
FBZ
-binds to beta tubulin, interferes w development and energy uptake
limit predatory behavior !!
can you use macrocylic lactone to treat tapeworm?
NO!!!!!
not effective bc tapeworm do not have glutamate-gated chloride channels or GABA receptors
flea tapeworm general biology
attached in small intestine of cats, dogs, sometimes people
obligate indirect lifecycle
-fleas and lice IH
IH infected by ingestion of egg packtes
DH infected by ingestion of metacestode stage in IH
dipylidium caninum
segmented body w paired genital pores
rostellum armed w small hooks and retractable
4 muscular suckers
barrel shaped (longer than wide) double pore proglattids
flea tapeworm treatment and prevention
no overt clinical signs
accurate diagnosis necessary for treatment and prevention
anticestodal drugs to treat
flea control essential to break the lifecycle !!
dipylidium is transmitted by
Flea as IH
Taenia sp require ingestion of
vertebrae IH
