Cyclophyllidian Tapeworms Flashcards
hymenolepididae
large family of tapeworms
eggs enclosed in 3 delicate membranes
lifecycle indirect w fleas & beetles IH
most live in small intestine
generally nonpathogenic
anoplocephalidea
scolex w/o rostellum or hooks
proglottids wider than long
distinctive eggs w pyriform oncosphere
all species use oribatid mites as obligate IH
anoplocephalidea perfoliata
pathogenic in horses
scolex w distinct lappets (bowtie)
associated with ulceration and reactive inflammation @ illeal-cecal jxn
diagnostic challenge
July-October
mites slow growing
anoplocephalidea perfoliata treatment
pyrantel
praziquantel w macrocyclic lactones FDA approved
-concerns in foals and gestating mares
pasture renovation to break up breeding habitat for mites
monezia sp
ribbon-like tapeworm in small intestine
2 species in cattle, sheep, goats
generally non-pathogenic
-young lambs 1st season on pasture @ risk
july-october
monezia sp treatment
FBZ
pasture renovation to break up breeding habitat for mites
human taeniasis
infection w adult tapeworm in genus taenia
obligate indirect life cycle
infected people pass eggs/proglottids in stool and infect livestock
people acquire parasites when consume poorly coked beef or pork w tapeworm larvae
-no person-person transmission EXCEPT T. solium
***Transmit people-> animals
neurocysticercosis
T. solium
acquired from accidential ingestion of pork tapeworm eggs via fecal/oral route
humans become IH w/ metacestode stage encysting in brain and CNS
sig cause of epilepsy
undiagnosed & untreated cases fatal
neurocysticercosis lab diagnosis
heightened index of suspicion
-history of travel to endemic country
MRI or CAT scan for lesions in brain
detection of cysticercosis specific proteins in serum of CSF
are pork tapeworm in humans considered zoonotic?
yes and can have dire consequences
-people may be IH and DH
-neurocysticercosis results from people as IH
