Tandoc et al Flashcards
T - Aim
To see whether depression was linked to Facebook usage, and whether Facebook use led to feelings of envy.
T - Type
Questionnaire
T - Design
Independent measures.
T - Hypothesis
- Facebook users would report higher levels of envy.
- The higher network of friends, the greater feelings of envy.
- Higher levels of envy would be associated with more symptoms of depression.
T - Sample
Self-selecting, 736 students with an average age of 19.
T - Procedure
A questionnaire was conducted online where answers were coded into quantitative data. It measured Facebook usage, levels of envy, and symptoms of depression.
T - Results
Heavy Facebook users showed stronger feelings of envy. The size of the network of Facebook friends was not related to envy. Facebook was a significant predictor of depression among college students. If Facebook is used positively, it can lessen depression.
T - Conclusion
Use of Facebook doesn’t directly lead to depression. However, Facebook envy can lead to depression.
T - Criticisms
Culturally biased sample, may have been influenced by social desirability, the study took place online so the sample is likely to reflect those who are regularly online, lacks construct validity, hard to establish cause and effect - does Facebook cause envy or are those with envy drawn to Facebook?
