Daniel et al Flashcards
D - Aim
To investigate the activity of the brain of schizophrenics, and how stimulants effect it.
D - Type
Lab/field experiment.
D - Design
Repeated measures.
D - Hypothesis
Those on amphetamines would perform better on a cognitive task.
D - Sample
10 schizophrenia sufferers from wards in the USA.
D - IV
Whether participants were given the amphetamine or the placebo.
D - DV
How well they performed on the cognitive task.
D - Procedure
All participants were stabilised on medications. They performed a control task and a cognitive task - the Wisconsin Card Sorting Task while having their brains measured using a SPECT scan. On two separate days, the conditions were repeated with either a placebo or an amphetamine, they were unaware of the placebo.
D - Results
There were significant differences between the two conditions while performing the WCST, amphetamines increased prefrontal cortex activity.
D - Conclusion
The experiment supported the Biological Theory, amphetamines stimulate dopamine, and cognitive ability.
D - Criticisms
Sample size was too small, tasks were artificial, drugs may cause extraneous variables, ethical concerns with brain scanning, findings are outdated, and they ignore the role of nurture.
