We can use anti-psychotics. These will aim to reduce dopamine levels, focusing on the Biological Theory.
How can we use drugs to treat depression?
We can use anti-depressants. It is thought that the more serotonin, the less depressed the person feels. So, these will aim to stop serotonin being absorbed so that serotonin remains in the synapse.
Name three types of psychotherapy.
CBT, psychoanalysis, and counselling.
What is CBT?
A type of psychotherapy that aims to target the Belief part of the ABC model. For depression, it would focus on challenging negative beliefs, and in schizophrenia, it would challenge their delusions.
What is psychoanalysis?
A type of psychotherapy that is used for schizophrenia, aiming to discover childhood traumas leading to their illness.
What is the Wisconsin Card Sorting Task?
A cognitive task used to check the function of the frontal lobe in schizophrenic’s brains.
What is a BDI?
A BDI measures the severity of depression.
What is the purpose of brain imaging techniques?
To look at differences in brain structure in people with mental disorders.
How do PET scans works?
Radioactive glucose is injected and traced by scanning the brain.
