Depression Theories Flashcards
What are some symptoms of depression?
Low mood, disturbed sleep and appetite, reduced energy, concentration and attention, lack of self-esteem, interest and enjoyment, bleak and pessimistic views for the future, ideas of guilt and worthlessness, and acts or thoughts of self-harm or suicide.
What is the prevalence of depression?
Depression effects 4-10% of the population, most in Asian ethnic groups and females.
What does Social Rank Theory say about depression?
The theory suggests that depression has a function - to reduce conflict, restoring social harmony.
How does Social Rank Theory say that depression reduces conflict?
It says that in a conflict, there’s a loser, and when a loser doesn’t fight back, they assume a low societal rank and the society will function normally. If they fought back, they’d cause more conflict and failure. Accepting losses and feeling depressed keep us safe from harm and in our place in society.
What are some criticisms of Social Rank Theory?
Too reductionist, depression isn’t limited to those of lower social ranks, depression isn’t a survival mechanism as it can cause suicide.
What does the ABC model say about depression?
The model suggests that depression is a result of our own irrational thinking, and how we perceive things.
What does the ABC stand for?
Activating event, Belief, Consequences.
What are some criticisms of the ABC model of depression?
Implies people have free will over their beliefs, doesn’t explain cases that don’t stem from an activating event, it is hard to distinguish whether irrational beliefs are a cause or a symptom of depression.
