Take yo' VITAMINS Flashcards
How does Vitamin E produce its’ anti-oxidant effects?
Controls the endogenous auto-oxidation of tissue phospholipid polyunsaturated fatty acids. It stabilizes cell and sub-cell membranes, especially those with a high free fatty acid, protecting them against lipid peroxidation (Fadok 1986). It also inhibits the synthesis of leukotrienes and prostaglandins (Ackerman 1987)
What occurs on a cellular level with vitamin E deficiency?
Lack of vitamin E results in membrane instability with associated loss of integrity and function (Fadok 1986). Dogs with experimentally induced vitamin E deficiency have been shown to have impaired in vitro lymphocyte function (Lang- weiler and Schultz 1981).
What deficiency can result from a diet high in oily fish in cats?
Vitamin E deficiency.
