about ___% of children and adolescents in the general population meet criteria for a DSM diagnosis
20% - very large number
there are also many others who do not meet criteria but still suffer from impairment
- 80% do not meet criteria, they are impt too
why are adolescence and young adulthood critical dev periods for mental health vulnerability?
- 48% of individuals who dev mental disorder do so by 18yrs old
- 63% do so by 25yrs old
why can categories to describe high risk individuals be bad in some ways?
categories used to describe youth at higher risk for specific diagnoses do not tell the whole story and sometimes not the real story
- ex: EDs occur most in girls; when we say this, we ignore an entire population of individuals. By doing so, we are missing all variation in boys

selective mutism
bipolar
ASD

SA: Select any ONE diagnosis that you think may have an especially negative impact on the development of a child or adolescent (ADHD) and DEFINE in 2 sentences
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that causes differences in the brain related to attention, behavior, and activity levels. This then causes symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity
SA: Explain your choice by describing THREE ways in which the core characteristics, associated characteristics, or other aspects of the disorder interfere with a child’s or adolescent’s development
1) may have difficulties making friendships with peers due to violating rules in social interactions, often rejected by peers. can also be socially awkward, difficulty recognizing emotions in others
2) difficulty performing well in school due to inattention and/or hyperactivity - difficult to sit still or to focus on work
3) symptoms will severely disrupt life- may feel as though they are always getting negative feedback on beh due to impulsivity/ hyperactivity –> low self-esteem, emotional pain
