Psychosis Flashcards
premorbid stage
must have delays in milestones; recall feelings of loneliness and isolation, a fragile common sense
prodromal stage
weak psychotic symptoms, cog/emot/functional impairment, social withdrawal, feel that something important is going to happen; boundary b/t one’s self and external world becomes unstable
first episode stage of psychosis
abnormal experiences intensify, delusions provide clarity –> meaning, relief; everything is revolving around them, no boundaries, overwhelmed by inner chaos
recovery/relapse
interventions include meds and therapy; up to 80% have relapses, but symptoms can be managed
rates of psychotic experiences
10% of children and adolescents (Healy et al.)
15% children (9-12yrs); 8% adols (13-18yrs) (McClellan)
many do not go on to develop psychotic illness, but they are at increased risk for psyhotic illness, a mental health diagnosis, and SB
features of psychotic-like experience but not true psychosis
symptoms that are situation-specific, very detailed, and occur in absence of other psychotic symptoms are NOT true psychosis
