tactical strengths and weaknesses Flashcards

1
Q

what are the 4 tactical strengths?

A
  1. Turning good distance away from the wall to get optimum explosion of wall so knows how many strokes she needs into the wall
  2. Her awareness of position in race so keeping her head still and focusing on own race
  3. Doesn’t go past 15m on her underwaters of the start or turns, showing acknowledgement and understanding of the rules.
  4. Saving energy for the last 25m to execute a good finish and work when others tire.

Q

what is the affect on performance for being a good distance from the wall In her turn?

A

Prevents disqualification for being too far or too close to the wall, it also means she isn’t wasting time gliding which would result in loosing time against opponents. It also means she can keep her stroke rate up whilst counting into the turn if she is confident

Q

what is the theory linked to a backstroke tumble turn making it a tactical strength?

A

She has developed a kinaesthesia by over learning the skill for how far away is optimum for her to turn and get the best drive from the wall in order to maximise the advantage of the turn. This resulted in the use of the cognitive learning theory as she recognises how her turn should feel and what it looks like for her to get the most advantage and repeats it.

Q

what is the affect of awareness of position in the race on performance?

A

This results in her staying calm and swimming efficiently whilst keeping high levels of self confidence in order to stay ahead and win the race and means she is swimming as quick as she possibly can

Q

what is the theory linked to awareness of position in race?

A

This means Lauren is at an optimum arousal level as she is staying calm and not tightening up and overworking her stroke rate. If she was over aroused her strokes would tense up and she would be throwing her arms back fast for a high stroke rate but not really moving anywhere. This also demonstrates a high sense of self efficacy and confidence as she believes she can win

Q

what is the affect on performance of not going past 15 on her underwaters from start or turn

A

Preventing disqualification from the race. This means the time is legal and she keeps the position and can go on to qualify for higher standard meets and be recognized by aquatics GB. It also means she can relax in the race as she doesn’t have to worry about a DQ.

Q

what is the theory linked with not going past 15m

A

The development of line judges through more funding to train officials means the results are fairer and people that do cheat will be caught. The line judges also have access to underwater cameras and streams to come to a final decision if necessary. This means that races are fair, and times are deserved. If you look in the clip you can see the line judges standing over the lanes to check.

Q

what is the affect on performance of saving energy for last 25 for a good finish?

A

Sprint finish last 25m allows for her to execute a good finish and in close races like the 100m back, this can be the difference between first and second so getting these skills right is key. This allows Lauren to work hard and pull away from the field when the opponents start to tire and slow down, she uses her back end speed to pull further away.

Q

what is the theory linked with saving energy for last 25

A

Lauren demonstrates good maximal strength as she can produce a fast last 25m. This last 25m shows Lauren’s maximal strength as she increases her speed in the last 25 so is increasing the power she is using and so is able to create an explosive movement and put more force into throwing herself back as momentum has been built up by her maximal strength

Q

what are the two tactical weaknesses of her performance?

A
  1. Lauren doesn’t use her underwaters as much as she could, in a swimming race you have up to 15metres, and Lauren uses between 5 and 10.
  2. Going out too hard in the first 25 meters meaning middle 50 is slower

Q

what is the affect on her performance of not using her underwater as much as she could

A

If Lauren utilized her underwaters more she could save energy for the swim and the fastest part of the race is under the water so she could’ve pulled away from the field further and got a quicker time. As she doesn’t use them as well it means she has to work harder to catch up in the actual swim

Q

what is the theory linked to make not utilising her underwater a tactical weakness?

A

Lauren could be over aroused which would cause her to release stress hormones like adrenaline. This can cause increased heart rate and respiratory rate meaning oxygen is depleted faster and underwaters can’t be sustained. so small things like coming up too early from the underwater due to trying too hard as this causes muscles to tense and not be at optimal performance.

Q

what is the affect on performance of going out too hard and having a slow middle 50

A

this can cause fatigue early on meaning she cannot push for the rest of the race and increase her gap and get a personal best as she has tired and muscles experiencing lactic acid.

Q

what is the theory linked with slowing down in the middle 50

A

Pushing too hard early on increases reliance on anaerobic energy systems, which builds up lactic acid in the muscles. This causes fatigue and the burning sensation, which deuterates muscle function and strength in the race. Exhausting anaerobic capacity early on can cause problems with recovery as she could potential struggle to keep technique which we can see as her underwater lengths start to decrease
