Fitness strengths and weaknesses Flashcards

1
Q

what are the 4 fitness strengths demonstrated?

A
  1. The power she demonstrates with explosion of the walls and blocks
  2. Lauren clearly has a lot of speed as as soon as she emerges from her underwaters, she is straight up into a fast stroke and pulls away from opponents.
  3. good balance allows for stability in maintain a steady rhythm and pace in the race
  4. reaction time is shown with her reaction from the starter off the block and to her competition

Q

what is the affect of power on her performance

A

this allows her to travel further from the push with less effort meaning she has an advantage over opponents getting a better lead

Q

what is the theory linked with power making it a strength

A

observational learning theory – vicarious learning. Through watching other successful performers Lauren has. Built up the knowledge that power is key to success in a short distance event like the 100m backstroke so has worked plyometric training into her programme.

Q

what is the affect of speed on the performance as a strength

A

meaning she can move water quicker so propel forward quicker maintaining a high stroke rate which will give an advantage against opponents

Q

what is the theory linked to speed as a strength

A

Carbohydrate loading is a strategy used to maximize glycogen stores in muscles before a race. Lauren may use this in the week leading up to BUCS as by increasing the body’s energy stores, she can delay fatigue and maintain speed throughout the race. Timing and amount are crucial

Q

what is the affect of good balance on her performance

A

stability in maintain a steady rhythm and pace in the race. In the 100m back maintaining a consistent speed is key, imbalance can disrupt the rhythm, slowing them down and lead to more energy being spent on correcting rather than propulsion. So allows lauren to have an advantage in efficient swimming

Q

what is the theory linked to good balance as a strength

A

Having good balance can decrease drag as less waves are created by the swimmer’s movement as their body and legs aren’t too high or low. A balanced position helps in avoiding unnecessary resistance, especially in underwaters and turns

Q

what is the affect of having a good reaction time from the block

A

a good reaction time gets here that little bit faster time which counts at the end but also allows her to react to opponents so to not get dropped and keep up with the pace

Q

what is the theory linked with a good reaction time

A

The development of starting buzzers allow for swimmers to hear the buzz all simultaneously and the technology around the pads and blocks allow for reaction to the buzzer to be recorded and this data can be used in training to improve reaction time which Lauren has done

Q

what are the two fitness weaknesses demonstrated in her performance

A
  1. flexibility can be seen as a weakness as her leg kick Is not as strong as her opponents.
  2. Cardiovascular endurance is not applicable as it is a sprint event, but muscular endurance can be applied in the form that she starts to fatigue on the 3rd 25m and her arms and legs slow down slowing her stroke rate down.

Q

what is the affect of poor flexibility on her performance

A

This gives her opponents an advantage and can cause fatigue to set in earlier meaning she has to work harder. In the race you can see she gets a little bit less propulsion than the other competitors

Q

what is the theory linked to why she has poor flexibility

A

This could be a result of lack of flexibility training. Bringing more sessions of what type of training here to improve flexibility? in to her programme will help improve range of motion at the hip so increase leg speed and reduce chance of injury.

Q

what is the affect of muscular endurance for the second half of the race

A

This muscular fatigue can be seen she goes out hard in the first 50m then slows on the 3rd 25m to then bring it back again on the last length. This could be due to a lack of muscular endurance with her muscles starting to ache and feel heavy in the water. If she didn’t slow down on the 3rd 25m she may have swam a quicker time which would have qualified her for more high stakes meets and increased the winning gap.

Q

what is the theory linked with muscular endurance

A

Lauren has a lack of confidence as she doubts her ability on the 3rd 25m and eases off to save energy for the last length, inhibiting her own performance. It also demonstrates that she maybe didn’t have a set goal other than winning the race so she had self efficacy External factors affecting motivation when it came to winning but maybe not pushing and swimming as fast as she can
