Table 8-4 Deformities of the Thorax Flashcards
Normal Adult thorax width
Thorax in norma dult is wider than it deep
Normal adult diameter
lateral diameter is larger than its anteroposterior diameter
What is Pectus Excavatum? What kind of heart condition can it cause?
Funnel CHest
Depression in lower portion of sternum
Compression of heart and great vessels may cuase murmurs
What is barrel chest?
Whag age is this condition normal?
What other disease is associated with this conditin
increased anteroposterior diameter.
Shape is normal during infancy,
often accompanies aging and COPD
What is Pectus Carinatum. What happens to costal cartilage adjacent to sternum
Pigeon Chest
Sternum is dipslaced anteriorly,
INcreasing anteroposterior diamter
Costal cartilages adjacent to the protruding sternum are depressed
What is traumatic flail chest? What causes it?
Wha thappens during inspiration? Expiration?
Multiiple rib fractures may result in paradoxical movements of the thorax
As descent of the diaphragm decreases intrathoracic pressure , on insipriation the injured area caves INWARD
Expriation, it moves outward
What is Thoracic Kyphoscoliosis
Abnormal spinal curvatures and vertebral rotation defrom the chest.
Distortion of the udneryling lugns may make interpreation of lung findings very difficult
