Food, shelter and basic treatment for illness. They were closed by Henry VIII.

Sheep farming instead of grain production was more profitable. This led to an increase in food prices.
Why were Eizabethans so worried about an increase in poverty?
Crime rates

Helpless/ deserving poor.

Undeserving poor
What is was poor relief?
Money paid for the poor to help them.
Two things the Poor Law stated
- People not paying the poor would be punished.
- The undeserving poor could be publicly whipped.
Two things the 1572 Poor Law stated
- Gave local officials power to decide how much money people should pay.
- Undeserving poor could be whipped and drilled a hole through both ears. Death penalty if caught three times.
