T3 L17: Treatment for primary and secondary dyslipidaemia Flashcards
What is the Framingham heart study?
A study looking into heart disease that has identified major cardiovascular disease risk factors
What was the aim of the Copenhagen city heart study?
Prevention of coronary heart disease and stroke
What is QRISK3?
The data base to see your risk of heart disease based on traditional risk factors
What is the difference between pharmacological primary and secondary prevention for cardiovascular disease?
Primary is when there is no previous history of CVD, 20mg Atorvastatin is given. Secondary is when there is previous CVD so 80mg Atorvastatin is given
What does LDL-receptor recognise?
ApoB-100 (Apolipoprotein B-100) on LDL
Where is LDL-R found?
All over the body but mostly on the liver
What do statins work on to reduce cholesterol?
They inhibit HMG-CoA reductase
What does the drug Ezetimibe do?
Its a potent and selective inhibitor of absorption of cholesterol in the small bowel so more is lost in faeces
What do PCSK9 inhibitors do?
They inhibit the breakdown of LDL receptors so more LDL is absorbed into hepatocytes
What is the lipid profile of hypercholesterolaemia?
Raised total cholesterol (TC) and LDL
What is the lipid profile of mixed hypercholesterolaemia?
Raised total cholesterol (TC), LDL and Triglycerides. Typically seen in people with glucose intolerance and diabetes
Consumption of what raises triglycerides?
Alcohol
How does hypertriglyceridemia cause harm?
Through acute pancreatitis
What is lipoprotein A?
Its produced by the liver. Its associated with MI’s, stroke, and aortic valve disease
What is apo(a)?
The main component of lipoprotein A. Its a glycoprotein that can cause atherosclerosis and thrombosis
