Q

Non-physiological [4]

A

○ Pathological = abnormal function in the body (disease)
§ Some people will say that “Non physiological = pathological”
○ Events only possible in a laboratory = function outside the body
§ Example: a cell that has intracellular Barium instead of sodium
○ The body, but NOT in relation to function = structure
§ Which is anatomy
○ Normal function in the body of enzymes or antibodies

Q

Physiology helps us to… [3]

A

• Understanding what is happening in the patient
Understand why the current cure fails to work on so many patients
Understand the pathways for making better cures

Q

Carbonic anhydrase

A

• Contributes indirectly to H+ crossing cell membrane (& across epithelia)
§ H+ is charged and cannot cross readily cross cell membranes
§ CO2 is uncharged and readily crosses the membrane
• Helps indirectly to transport CO2 around body
§ CO2 is poorly soluble in blood
H+ and HCO3- are highly soluble
