T1-Respiratory Study Guide Flashcards
What is pleural effusion
buildup of excess fluid between the pleural layers in the chest cavity
what are three causes of pleural effusion
-infection (pneumonia)
-heart failure
-pulmonary embolism
what are s/s of deterioration in respiratory status (12)
-Dyspnea
-Orthopnea
-Tripod stance
-hypotension
-cyanosis
-pallor
-SOB
-confusion
-irregular respirations
-wheezing
-nose flaring
-extreme fatigue
Reason for chest tube placement (3)
-Pleural effusion
-pneumothorax
-surgery/trauma to chest
What position should the chest tube drainage apparatus be in relation to the patient, why?
-chest tube drainage system should always be lower than the patient’s chest to prevent back flow of liquid and minimize risk of infection
what determines the amount of suction delivered by the chest tube apparatus?
the height of water in the suction control chamber determines the amount of suction delivered by the chest tube by negative pressure
what effect does pain have on breathing patterns
patients will not be able to take full breaths in due to pain, likely decreasing oxygenation and tissue perfusion
what symptoms are associated with community acquired pneumonia (8)
-shortness of breath
-cough
-heavy sputum
-fever
-chills
-chest pain
-N/V
-diarrhea
What is C & S?
-Culture and sensitivity is a type of test that identifies the microorganism present in a clinical sample and determines which antibiotic the microorganism is most susceptible to
Why is C&S important?
-Allows for timely and effective treatment of infections and decreases the risk of bacteria resistance in patients receiving antibiotic therapy
