A

(Think ORAL and TRUST)

  • Primary needs centered on the oral zone (lips, tongue, mouth)
  • Hunger and pleasure are satisfied here
  • Trust comes from needs being met
  • When needs not met, infant becomes aggressive (biting, spitting, crying)

18 months to 3 years

(Think CONTROL BOWELS and INDEPENDENCE)

  • Neuromuscular control over anal sphincter allows child to control bowel movements.
  • Coincides with the struggle for separation and independence from caregivers.
  • Completion of stage = well-developed
  • Stuck in stage = anal child, willful, stubborn, need for orderliness
