- Primary needs centered on the oral zone (lips, tongue, mouth)
- Hunger and pleasure are satisfied here
- Trust comes from needs being met
- When needs not met, infant becomes aggressive (biting, spitting, crying)

18 months to 3 years

(Think CONTROL BOWELS and INDEPENDENCE)
- Neuromuscular control over anal sphincter allows child to control bowel movements.
- Coincides with the struggle for separation and independence from caregivers.
- Completion of stage = well-developed
- Stuck in stage = anal child, willful, stubborn, need for orderliness

- Focuses on genital organs
- Gender identity
- Unconscious sexual feelings toward parent of the opposite sex is common (Oedipus Complex)
- Completion of stage = sexual curiosity, mastery of instinctual impulses
