T--Sampling Flashcards
Random sampling
• Every member of the target population has an equal chance of becoming part of the sample
Strengths:
• Sufficient size, make the results easily generalizable, ensure the representativeness
Limitations:
• Not practical to carry out truly random sampling
Convenience (opportunity) sampling
• Recruit participants that are easily available
Strengths:
• When financial resources are limited
• When generalization of the findings is not the focus
Limitations:
• Low generalizability due to sample bias
Stratified sampling
- Demographic differences
- Proportionally representative of the group
Strengths:
• Allow researcher to control representativeness of some key characteristics
• When the researcher is certain about which characteristic are essential in a small sample size
Limitations:
• Hard to implement
• Requires more knowledge about characteristics of the target population
Self-selected sampling
• Recruit volunteers through newspaper
Strengths:
- Quick and easy
- Wide range of participants
Limitations:
• Limited representativeness and generalization
• Some volunteers pursue monetary incentives for their participation
