T-lymphocytes Flashcards
1
Q
Where do T-lymphocytes mature?
A
The THYMUS GLAND
2
Q
What type of immunity are T- lymphocytes associated with?
A
Cell-mediated immunity
3
Q
Why are they called cell-mediated?
A
They only respond to body’s own cells that have become antigen presenting
4
Q
What type of cells are antigen-presenting (4)?
A
- Phagocytes
- Infected body cells (from virus)
- Cancer cells
- Transplanted cells
5
Q
How does cell-mediated immunity work?
A
- The receptors of helper T cells fit into these foreign antigens on antigen-presenting cells.
- This attachment activated clonal selection.
- The cloned cells turn into:
- Cells that activate phagocytosis
- Cells that activate a humoral response.
- Cytotoxic cells
- Memory cells
6
Q
What is clonal selection for T cells?
A
Specific T cells divide by mitosis
7
Q
What do cytotoxic cells do?
A
Produce a chemical called PERFORIN which makes holes in the cell membrane of pathogens; killing them.
