HIV shit Flashcards
1
Q
Full form of HIV and AIDS
A
HIV- Human immunodeficiency virus
AIDS- Acquired immunodeficient syndrome
2
Q
Describe the structure of HIV (out to in)
A
- Attachment protein
- lipid envelope
- matrix
- Capsid
- Reverse transcriptase and RNA
3
Q
How does a HIV virus replicate?
A
- Hi virus enters the bloodstream and attached to T helper lymphocytes.
- Capsid attached to the cell membrane and the RNA enters the T cell.
- Reverse transcriptase turns RNA into DNA.
- HIV DNA enters T cell’s nucleus.
- mRNA made from HIV DNA and more HIV particles are made using the T cell’s protein synthesis mechanisms.
- T cell membrane used to form the lipid envelope as well as the new HIV particles form the replicated virus.
4
Q
Describe the ELISA test
A
- Sample applied to a surface- wash to remove excess antigens.
- Antibodies applied- wash to remove unattached antibodies.
- Second antibody applied with an enzyme attached to it.
- Colorless substrate complementary to that enzyme is applied, which changes color when enzyme acts on it.
- The color intensity tells us about the amount of antigen present.
5
Q
Why do anti-biotics not work on viruses
A
No metabolic mechanisms or cell structures to destroy in a virus
6
Q
How can HIV lead to death?
A
- It damages T cells which damages the cell-mediated response.
- Body becomes susceptible to other infections
- Secondary diseases cause death
