B-lymphocytes Flashcards
1
Q
Where are B lymphocytes produced?
A
In the Bone marrow
2
Q
What type of response is B lymphocytes associated with?
A
Humoral response
3
Q
How does humoral immunity work?
A
- Specific B lymphocytes attach to complementary antigens on a pathogen. These antigens are taken in and presented.
- Helper T cells bind to these processed antigens and activate clonal selection.
- The clones cells turn into:
- Plasma cells
- Memory cells
4
Q
Compare what plasma and memory cells actually do and their characteristics.
A
Plasma cells - Produce and secrete specific antibodies into the plasma which destroy that specific pathogen. - Provide short-term immunity - Primary response White blood cells - Remain in the blood and when encountered with the same pathogen again they divide rapidly into plasma and more white blood cells. The plasma cells then produce antibodies at a faster rate and by an increased amount. - Provide long-term immunity - Secondary response
5
Q
What are specific antibodies also known as?
A
Monoclonal antibodies
