T-Cells Flashcards
T-Cells
are made in the bone marrow but mature in the thymus gland
recognise many different antigens and reproduce rapidly in response to antigens
Do not make antibodies
called Cell-mediated immunity
T-Helper Cells
phagocytes that ingest antigens, keep some of the antigen on the surface
they recognise the antigen
releases chemical signals that stimulates B-cells and stimulates the phagocytes to continue
die after a few days
recognises pathogens and kick-start the immune system
T-Killer Cells
kill body cells that have been infected with a virus
identifies the antigen (virus) and kills the infected cell before the virus has time to replicate
can only kill a virus when it is inside a cell
can also destroy cancer cells
binds with a virus/cancer and then copy themselves and releases enzymes into the pathogen which kills them
T-Memory Cells
recognises pathogens and have a bigger and faster response in the future
live for a long time
