Ovaries 2
Women are born wit approx 400 000 egg cells.
-only several hundred are released thru ovulation
Usually, only one follicle mature and release its egg cell during the menstrual cycle
The egg cell is expelled from the follicle in the process of ovulation
Corpus Leteum
The remaining follicular tissue that grows within the ovary form a solid mass
-secretes hormones to maintain the lining of the uterus
Fallopian tubes
Also called the oviduct
Cilia cells line the duct and helps to move the egg down the duct into the uterus
Uterus
Is a thick muscular organ that can expand during pregnancy
Endometrium
In the inner lining of the uterus
The endometrium is richly supplied with blood vessels
Cervix and vagina
The neck of the uterus is called the cervix and opens into the vagina
The vagina is a thin walled chamber that forms the birth canal
Cervical cancer
1 in 90 women in australia develops cerviccal cancer
Takes many years to detect
Usually detected from abnormal bleeding
Involves the destruction of normal tissue surrounding the cervix and can lead to death
Can be detected early with PAP smear tests
Can also be caused by HPV
PAP smear test
Involves the scraping of cell from the surface of the cervix, which can be tested for abnormal cells
Ovaries
Eggs develop here - ova(pl) - ovum sg)
Each ovary is enclosed in a tough protective capsule and contains many follicles
A follicle consists of one egg cell surrounded by one or more layers of follicle cells
-protect, nourish and develop the egg cell
