B-Cells Flashcards
B-Cells
mature in the bone marrow
recognise and ignore cells that have MHC markers that are the same as themselves.
reacts when it recognises MHC markers as “non-self”
Immunoglobins
are proteins that identify antigens
B-Cells have immunoglobins on their surface- antibodies
immunoglobins of each B-Cell have a specific structure and recognise only one antigen
What do the B-Cells do
When a B cell encounters an antigen, it replicates rapidly to produce large amounts of plasma cells
it is involved in responses to viruses and bacteria
attack foreign material (outside the cell)
Plasma Cells
produce antibodies and then release them into the blood stream
only lasts a few days
process called antibody-mediated immunity
B- Memory Cells
have the same antibody-antigen specificity as the parent B-cell
survive for several years or life
if 2nd infection occurs, a faster and more severe B cell reaction will occur
person becomes immune to that particular antigen or disease
