Mitosis Flashcards
Cell division
Each cell has chromosomes which contain DNA. When making new cells, the DNA must be replicated so that each new cell contains the same number of chromosomes.
What is Cell division responsible for?
s responsible for growth, replacement and repair
Chromosomes
In humans there are 46 chromosomes or 23 pairs of chromosomes called diploids The mature egg and sperm have a set of 23 chromosomes called haploids
When are chromosomes visible?
Only during cell division
Female chromosome
XX
Male chromosomes
XY
Mitosis
This division of cells results in daughter cells with exactly the same types and number of chromosomes as in the parent cell Most cells in the body undergo mitosis e.g. Hair, skin etc
Phases of mitosis
Interphase Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase Cytokinesis
Mitosis - interphase
DNA is replicated.
Centrosome, which later forms the spindle, is also replicated.
Mitosis - prophase
DNA continues condensing into chromosomes.
Chromosomes continue to condense and appear as double-chromatids.
spindle begins to form.
Mitosis - metaphase
The spindle organises the chromosomes on the equator of the cell
Mitosis - anaphase
The chromosomes segregate pulling the chromatids apart
Mitosis - telophase
Two new nuclei form around the cells
Mitosis - cytokinesis
Division of the cytoplasm is complete. The two daughter cells are now separate cells.
