Systems and surroundings, irreversible and reversible reaction Flashcards
define: system vs surroundings
chemical reactions/everything else
energy transferral between system and surroundings depends on what
whether system is endo/exothermic
define: open system
system which can exchange matter and energy with surroundings. Eg. boiling pot of water without a lid
define: closed system
system which can exchange only energy, and not matter with the surroundings. Eg. boiling pot of water with a lid.
define: irreversible reaction
when significant reaction can occur in one direction only. Products can’t be converted back to reactants
• Eg. combustion reaction
define: reversible reaction
reaction in which significant reaction can occur in the reverse direction, as products can react with each other under suitable conditions.
what arrow represents reversible reaction
equilibrium arrow
if an exothermic reaction is reversed…
itll be endothermic
