Systems. Flashcards
What is it? Circulatory
A transport system to and from the cells.
What does it do?Circulatory
Distributes blood around the body. Allows waste to be taken from cells.
What do the blood vessels do? Veins
Veins: large vessels that carry to the heart, thinner than arteries, carry oxygenated blood except from lungs.
Arteries:
Arteries: thick walled vessels that carry blood from the heart. All carry oxygenated blood except from artery to blood.
Capillaries:
Capillaries: very thin single cell walled to every cell. Allow blood to flow through.
Heart
- deoxygenated blood comes in from the right atrium
- that blood gets pumped through the lungs by the right ventricle and back into the heart through the left atrium and left ventricle.
3.oxygenated blood comes out and goes through the body.
The left side pumps blood around the body and is much stronger.
Bad cholesterol sticks to the walls and restricts blood flow this will eventually cause a heart attack. Good cholesterol is found in things like fruit&veg and oily fish.
Heart pumps 8000 liters of blood a day.
Average adult contains 5L of blood
Respiratory What does it do?
Allows gas exchange through the body.
Oxygen molecules pass into the blood and are carried along by red blood cells, blood also carries glucose molecules GLUCOSE + OXYGEN=CARBON DIOXIDE+WATER+ENERGY
CO2 goes into alvioeli puts in oxygen
2 atoms=molecule
Breathing IN
Air travels in goes down your windpipe and bronchus into the lungs travels through the air sac wall into blood filled tubes. The blood transports your cells into every part of the body. When you breathe in your diaphragm moves downwards for room for your lungs to inflate. Haemoglobin provides the red pigments in blood
Breathing OUT
CO2 and water go from your cells into your blood, then passes through your air sac wall and into your lungs, travel up through your windpipe, trachea, and through your bronchus. Then finally leave though the nose and mouth. Diaphragm moves up to force CO2 out. CO2 = 1 CARBON ATOM 2 OXYGEN ATOMS.
Smoking
Irritates the lung lining, causes DNA to mutate, damages the cilia, nose-hairs, it can lead to lung cancer
Holding our breaths
When we do this the brain signals the lungs to start again. When our faces hit cold water we can hold our breathe for longer.
Digestive system
Where food you eat is broken down. It is important because the chemicals from the food are needed in the other cells of the body.
Stomach enzymes
Pepsin and rennin
Starch is chemically broken down into glucose molecules
Glucose molecules move into the cells and are used as fuel for respiration.
MOUTH
Salivary gland produce saliva, teeth break it down insizers cutting K9 tearing Pre momers- chrushing momers-grinding. Tongue pushes down.
