Systems Flashcards
What BUS bars does the archer III have?
Non-essential bus
Essential bus
Hot Battery bus
Avionics bus
Lighting bus
Emergency bus
What is RAIM
Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring
Assures accuracy of the GPS
How are individual systems protected in the electrical system?
In the Archer, Breakers. Other planes may use fuses also.
Describe what happens during detonation in a piston engine.
Detonation is an uncontrolled, explosive ignition of the fuel air mixture within the cylinder combustion chamber.
Describe how a turn coordinator works.
The gimbal in the turn coordinator is canted, therefore it’s electrically powered gyro can sense both rate of roll and rate of turn.
What instruments are part of the pitot / static system?
Airspeed Indicator, VSI, Altimeter
What is unusable fuel?
The fuel at the bottom of the tank that is unusable during flight.
What is the purpose of oil?
Oil cleans, lubricates and provides a seal between cylinder walls.
What is the purpose of a battery?
The battery supplies power to start the engine and serves as a limited back up power source if the alternator fails.
What are magnetos and how many does your airplane have?
Magnetos are self-contained engine driven units that contain a magnet to genterate
What conditions are favorable for carburetor icing
21 C and 80 % humidity or better
What emergency equipment and survival gear is carried aboard the aircraft?
ELT, Fire extinguisher
What are the 4 strokes of an engine
Intake, compression, power, exhaust
How is steering accomplished on the ground.
The Archer is equipped with a nose wheel steering linked to rudder pedals.
What does the mixture control do?
It regulates the fuel to air ratio.
What is the Alternator Control Unit?
The alternator control unit is a voltage regulator that controls the rate of charge to the battery.
How is the cabin heated.
Air passes by the exhaust and muffler then into the cabin.
Describe how the VSI works.
Contains a diaphragm with a calibrated leak.
What would you do if the aircraft was a quart low on oil?
Add oil as per instructions in the POH.
If the alternator fails during flight, will the engine quit as a result?
No, the magnetos supply power to the spark plugs in the engine.
How many times does a crankshaft turn 360 degrees during a 4 stroke engine cycle.
2
Describe what happens during preignition in a piston engine.
The fuel/air mixture ignites prior to normal ignition event.
Describe the engine in your aircraft.
Lycoming
IO-360-B4A
180 hp @ 2700 RPM
Fuel injected
Direct drive
Naturally aspirated
Horizontally opposed
Describe the electrical system for your aircraft.
The airplane is equipped with a 28 volt alternator and a 24 volt system.
How many spark plugs does the Archer III have?
2 per cylinder
8
How many quarts of oil does the Archer III hold?
6-8
What type of fuel do we use? What color is it?
AVGAS 100LL
Blue
Describe how the airspeed indicator works.
The ASI uses both the Pitot, as well as the static system. The ASI introduces the static pressure into the outer case while the pitot pressure is introduce into the diaphragm. The dynamic pressure expands or contracts the diaphragm with is connected to the indicating system.
What is ADF
Automatic Direction Finding
What is a magnetometer
Device that measures strength of Earth’s magnetic field. (one on each wing in the archer)
What function does an ADC serve in a Glass Cockpit flight display.
Air Data Computer is a solid-state device that takes pitot and static air pressure inputs and computes airspeed, altitude and vertical speed
What function does the AHRS serve in a glass cockpit flight display?
The “Attitude and Heading Reference System” is a solid-state system that replaces free-spinning gyros to generate pitch and bank info.
What is DME
distance measuring equipment for VOR
The green arc on the airspeed indicator is…
The normal operating range
