What is SLE?

Autoimmune disease
Body’s immune system attacks it’s own tissue resulting in inflammation
What are the risks for SLE?
Females 20-40 yrs old
Genetics
Ethnicity
What are the S/S of SLE?
Butterfly rash (malar)
Fever/fatigue/malaise
Weight loss, anorexia
Joint pain, swelling, stiffness
Pancytopnenia
Photosensitivity
Reynauds phenomenon
Blurred vision
Anemia
What can trigger SLE?
Sun exposure
Toxins
Medications
Bacteria/viruses
Treatments for SLE?
NSAIDS
Corticosteroids
Methotrexate
Immunosuppressants
Client education
Apply SPF 30 when outside
Avoid sun exposure
Mild shampoo/soap/ skin products
Avoid crowds - infections
No live vaccines
Report peripheral periorbital edema
