What are the S/S?
LOW RR + BP + HR + MOOD + METABOLISM
Fatigue, lethargy
Cold intolerance (always cold
Constipation
Hair loss
Dry scaly skin
Amenorrhea
Weight gain
Edema
What is the treatment for hypothyroidism?
Levothyroxine
Lifelong treatment
Leaves T3, T4 in the body
Long, slow onset
Take on empty stomach, in the morning
Do not take with calcium: milk, yogurt, eggs
Do not take w/ iron
Do not stop abruptly
What is MYXEDEMA COMA?
Life threatening
Poorly managed hypothyroidism
stress triggered (acute illness, surgery, chemo, sedatives/ opioids)
Everything is DANGEROUSLY LOW
What are the S/S of myxedema?
Resp. failure
Hypotension
Hypothermia
Brady cardia, dysrhythmia
Treatment for Myxedema coma?
IV bolus levothyroxine
Maintain patent airway w/ ventilatory support
