What parts of the body are most commonly affected by lupus?
Lupus most commonly affects the skin, joints, and kidneys.
Lupus is characterized by episodes of exacerbation and remission.
**Lupus is most likely to be seen in teenagers (11 - 15 years of age).
Common s/s of systemic lupus erythematosus…
-recurrent fevers
-fatigue
-weight loss
For diagnosis of lupus, one must have a least four of the following s/s as well…
*arthritis with pain and swelling of two or more joints
*MALAR RASH (aka butterfly rash)
*renal disorder presenting with proteinuria
*neurological disorder presenting with seizures or psychosis
*hematologic disorder presenting with anemia, leukopenia, lymphocytopenia, or thrombocytopenia
*photosensitivity
*mouth or nose ulcers
*serositis - inflammation of a serous membrane such as the pericardium, peritoneum, or pleura
*positive antinuclear antibody - causing the body to attack its own immune system
What might the doctor order to help determine a diagnosis for lupus?

-CBC
-UA
-antinuclear antibody labs
-autoantibody labs
What are supportive/non-pharmacological measures that can help treat s/s of lupus?
-avoid smoking
-maintain a healthy weight
-eat a healthy diet
-limit sun exposure
Nursing Interventions for Lupus:
-monitor vital signs and labs
-infection precautions
-**Tylenol should be given in limits due to risk for liver damage
