What is the correct order of steps when a patient coming into the practice?
- History
- Extra-oral examination (E/O)
- Intra-oral examination (I/O)
What is taken in a standard patient history?
C/o - patient complaint
HPC - history if present complaint
MH - Medical history
DH - dental history
SH - social history
What information is found out in dental history?
Time since last visits
Had any specific treatment
Have any appliances e.g. dentures crown…
What information is found out in social history?
Living conditions
If they have dependants e.g. kids elders
Employment and work patterns
Lea tire activities e.g. contact sport would be a Important thing to know
What is found out in medical history?
General health
Any current illness or medication
Allergies
Ever been admitted to hospital if so any problems with bleeding in operation
Smoking, drinking pregnancy
What is the 4th principle of the GDC
Maintain and protect patient information
What is confidentiality?
This is central to the trusting relationship between a dentist and patient, information patient shares should be confined to the dental team and not shared without their permission
Why are dental record important?
They can be kept for at least 11 year so has lots of information in it
They contain Case notes, test results, photographs and other medical correspondence
