What is an extra oral examination
Examination of the face, jaw, head and neck
What are the specific areas examined in an extra-oral exam?
- Face symmetry - looking for swellings or lesions
- Palpation of lymph nodes - Submental and Mandibular, and cervical chain
- Mouth opening - difficulties opening or any deviations
- TMJ joint - clicking or tenderness
- Muscles of mastication - tenderness, spasms or hypertrophy
What lymph nodes are palpated?
Sub mental
Sub Mandibular
Cervical chain - follows down from ear to supraclavicular nodes
- to palpate generally roll over the nodes with fingers together
What is looked for when examining the TMJ
- Range of motion - at least 40-55mm deviation on opening/closing
- Make sure it protrudes and retracts
- Any nodes when moving
How to look for symmetry in the face?
- Draw a line down the middle
- Check for any differences on opening and closing
How are the muscles of mastication checked?
- Palpate the areas ( masseter and temporalis)
- Check for enlargement or tenderness
What areas are checking in an intra-oral exam?
- Lips
- Mucosa - buccal, lingual and palatal
- Tongue
- Gingiva
- Floor of mouth
- Pharynx / Fauces
- Palate
What are the differences between fungiform and filiform papillae?
- Filiform appear as white dots
- Fungiform appear as red dots and mushroom shaped
How much of your diet should free sugars make up?
5% of daily energy intake
What are free sugars?
These are non milk extrinsic sugars and added sugars e,g, sugars added in honey, syrups but it excludes sugars in milk products
