What are the main aims for dental care?
To work in partnership with patients and other dental professionals to:
- achieve the best possible level of oral health
- help maintain patients level of oral health
How can diseases be spread?
- Direct
- Indirect
What are examples of direct transmission of disease?
Person to person contact e.g. touch, sex, mother breast feeding a child
What are examples of indirect transmission of disease?
- Via inanimate objects e.g. contaminated surface or instruments
- Via biological products e.g. blood, water food

- Via air - particles can be inhaled or settle on surfaces
What are the most common ways for disease transmission in dentistry?
- Direct contact with blood or fluid
- indirect contact with contaminated instruments or surfaces
- Airborne particles this comes from aerosol producing procedures, if they enter the eye, nose or mouth mucosa they can be infectious
What is contained in aerosols from surgery?
- Blood
- Saliva
- Tooth debris
- Restoration pieces e.g. amalgam
- Tissue remains
- Water
- Micro-organisms
What is the size of aerosols particles?
Less than 5 micro-meters stay suspended in the air
Greater than 5 micro meters are deposited on surfaces
What simple steps must dentist take to prevent transmission?
- Wash hands regularly
- Wear PPE
- Try to maintain distance in the practice (2 meters)

- Starting work
- Clinical perp or procedures
- Eating food or drink
- Direct patient contact
After what should you do hand hygiene?
- Direct patient contact
- After contact with waste, contaminated items or body fluids
- After removal of PPE

- Self contamination e.g. coughing, sneezing
What are the 7 steps on washing hands?
- Palm to palm
- Palm to back of hand
- Fingers interlocking
- Rotation around thumb
- Back of finger on the palm
- All fingers clenched rotating on palm
- Rotating round wrist then rinsing
What are different ways to wash hand?
- Using hand soap - this suspends the micro-organisms in solution and rinses them off , don’t use bar of soap
- Hand gel - alcohol based hand-rub is acceptable but must rinse after 3-4 uses to prevent built up of emollients
