Q

What is an oscillator

A

Generates a sound at a pitch, and allows you to change the wave shape
Each wave has different harmonic content, so can create different timbres

Q

What does a filter do

A

Q

What is the cutoff

A

The point at which the filter begins to remove frequencies

9
Q

What is resonance

A

Adds a characteristic narrow boost to frequencies around the cutoff
Creates a whistly sound, making the sound seem brighter and harsher

Q

What is the amplifier

A

Controls the sounds volume
Control signals can be used to alter the volume over time

What are the different parameters

A

Pitch
Filter cutoff frequency
Volume

17
Q

What does an LFO do

A

Controls the signal used to alter a parameter over time
Similar to an envelope

18
Q

Rate

A

Speed at which the modulation takes place; can either be synced to a note value in a DAW or given an absolute value in hertz, often between around 0.05Hz and 15Hz

19
Q

Depth

A

How much the modulation affects the assigned element of the synthesiser; the greater the depth, the wider the range of values for the modulated parameter

20
Q

Shape

A

Type of waveform used to modulation the signal

21

Moog modular
Minimoog

26
Q

What is an arpeggiator

A

A basic sequencer that plays or repeats a number of notes in a specific pattern

27
Q

What is a benefit to software synthesisers

A

The ability to produce the sounds of multiple synths in one place
