Recording Techniques Flashcards
What is a good mic placement for Electric guitar/Bass guitar
Dynamic mic (for high SPL) with a cardioid polar pattern placed in front of amplifier about 15cm. On axis and in centre of cone will sound brighter
What should be considered when recording acoustic guitar
Should use a cardioid condenser mics for their wide frequency response, placed around 15-60 cm away on the 12 fret.
Should use a pair pointing at the hole and the frets
Trumpet/Trombone
Dynamic or condensor
place in front of bell or slightly to the side
Use pad on condenser
Saxophone
Dynamic or Condenser
condenser for slight distance
dynamic for spot miking
Flute/Clarinet
Condenser
placed above to avoid key sounds
Grand piano
Use condensers above open top for string capture
An XY pair used around to capture distance
Upright piano
mic the strings with a spaced or XY pair of condensers
Vocals
Large diaphragm, condenser mic, 15-30cm away from the mic with a pop shield
Drum kit
large diaphragm dynamic mic for the kick
dynamic mics for toms
dynamic mic for snare
small diaphragm condenser for hi hat
pair of overhead condensers for cymbals, XY is best
Be aware of phase or cancellation issues
Coincident (XY) pair
Two cardioid mics placed so the capsules are next to each other
This combines the polar patterns
A good mono cambatbility is maintained
Spaced (AB) pair
Two omnidirectional mics placed around 30-50cm apart
Used for recording large ensembles that require ambiance
Mid-Side (MS) pair
A cardioid and a figure-of-eight mic set at 90 degrees to each other
Cardioid points forward towards the sound source, and figure-of-eight picks up the sides
how do you process mid side recordings
duplicate the figure-of-eight recording and hard pan to either side
