A

If All animals come into oestrus together they can all be yarded on the same day

Animals can all be AI on the same day

Lambing and calving can be condensed into a shorter period

All saleable animals will be an even line, pen and lot

A

Synchronisation is expensive

The farmer needs to have developed organisational skills especially when carrying out embryo transfer

Treatment one

Progesterone treatment

A

Progesterone is used to make the female believe they are pregnant and stop cycling. This is administered into the vagina in a form of a seeder in cows and sponge in sheep.

A progesterone releasing intra vaginal device attached to a plastic coil is inserted in cows vagina

Removed 10-12 days later. Insemination occurs 56 hours later.

Treatment two

Prostaglandin injection

A

Administrated via injections in 2 doses

The injections are given 10-12 days apart

Female comes onto heat after second dose

The cow is then inseminated 48 hours later

This hormone initiates oestrus
