Disadvantages of synchronisation
Synchronisation is expensive
The farmer needs to have developed organisational skills especially when carrying out embryo transfer
Treatment one
Progesterone treatment
Progesterone is used to make the female believe they are pregnant and stop cycling. This is administered into the vagina in a form of a seeder in cows and sponge in sheep.
A progesterone releasing intra vaginal device attached to a plastic coil is inserted in cows vagina
Removed 10-12 days later. Insemination occurs 56 hours later.
Treatment two
Prostaglandin injection
Administrated via injections in 2 doses
The injections are given 10-12 days apart
Female comes onto heat after second dose
The cow is then inseminated 48 hours later
This hormone initiates oestrus
