Synapses + Reflex Arc Flashcards
What do reflexes do?
Help prevent injury
What is the reflex arc?
The passage of information in a reflex from receptors to effectors
What happens when an impulse reaches a synapse between two neurones?
When an impulse comes to a synapse they trigger chemicals called neurotransmitters which cause an impulse to be sent along to the next neurone
Why are reflex’s faster than normal response?
You don’t have to think about it
What is a synapse?
The connection between to neurones
What is the name of the chemical that trigger the nerve signal?
Neurotransmitter
What does the neurotransmitter do?
Diffuses across the gap (synapse) and sets of new electrical signals in the next neuron
Why is the transmission of a nerve impulse slowed down by the synapses?
Because the neurotransmitter takes time to diffuse across the gap
