synapse & reflexes Flashcards
the reflex arc
a dangerous stimulus is detected by receptors.
impulses are sent along a sensory neuron.
in the CNS the impulse passes to a relay neuron.
impulses are sent along a motor neuron.
the impulse reaches an effector resulting in the appropriate response.
what’s the order of the reflex arc:
what the mnemonic stands for:
stimulus receptor cells sensory neurone synapse relay neurone motor neurone effector cell response
what’s a synapse?
a gap between two neurones
function of a reflex arc:
it allow us to react quicker to dangerous situations, this is because the nerve impulse doesn’t pass through the brain
reflex actions:
receptors:
they sense the stimulus - change in environment, heat
reflex actions:
CNS
co‐ordinates the response and send impulses to effectors (muscles/glands) which bring about the response.
reflex actions:
neurones
carry electrical signals (impulses) to the CNS (brain or spinal cord)
reflex actions:
stimuli
change in environment, light, heat, pressure
