mitosis eoy Flashcards
what is mitosis?
the production of 2 genetically identical diploid daughter cells.
each with identical sets of chromosomes in the nucleus to the parent cell.
importance of mitosis
• growth • repair • asexual reproduction
growth - used to make new cells
repair - used to repair damaged cells
asexual reproduction - one organism can reproduce on its own to make a clone
mitosis cell cycle
interphase
new sub-cellular structures are made
- mitochondria & ribosomes
DNA replicates
stage 1 prophase
chromosomes shorten and thicken, the nucleus breaks down &
spindle fibres begin to form
stage 2 metaphase
spindles attach to chromosomes,
chromosomes line up along equator
stage 3 anaphase
spindles shorten, pull chromosomes apart to each side of the poles
stage 4 telophase
a membrane forms around each set of chomrosomes to form two new nuclei
stage 5 cytokinesis
cytoplasm splits and there is now two cells
