Sensory Dysfunction: general definition
referring to an abnormal reaction to stimulus
Anaesthesia
Absence of any sensation; the stimulus does not produce any of the expected sensation.
Hypaesthesia
(From Hypo: too many consecutive vowels in English) Diminished sensation; the type of sensation experienced matches the type of stimulus but the strength\intensity of the sensation is less than expected
Hperaesthesia
Heightened sensation; the type of sensation experienced matches the type of stimulus, but the sensation produced is exaggerated or unexpectedly strong.
Paraesthesia
Not painful; Abnormal sensations. An abnormal stimulus response. Eg- pins and needles, bugs crawling on skin.
Dysaesthesia
Paraesthesia that is painful. An abnormal response to stimulus. Eg- stabbing, electric burning.
Allodynia
Painful; instead of the expected sensation, a normally non-nociceptive stimulus results in pain.
Hyperalgia/hyperalgesia
A type of hyperaesthesia; a heightened sensitivity to painful stimuli; unusually intense pain response to a nociceptive stimulus; frequently accompanied by strong emotional response
