Define: paralysis & list the 3 types

A

Any significant loss of movement or motor control over intentional movement; term can be applied to different states. Three types: flaccid, spastic, rigid paralysis.

Define: paresis; AKA?

A

Motor weakness as a result of a neurological cause. Results in milder versions of significant motor impairment.

Sometimes referred to as ‘partial paralysis.’

Define: quadriplegic + aka

A

AKA tetraplegic (EU), full body (but not necessarily F/B affected)

All four limbs are affected. The body parts d not have to be affected to the same degree.

Define: hemiplegic; common in which pathology?

A

The two limbs on the SAME side of the body are affected; often half of the body is affected, divided sagitally. Common in stroke.

Define: paraplegic

A

The two lower limbs are affected, often the lower half of the body to varying degrees (below T2).

A

*Only used if you wouldn’t use hemi- or para-.

Literally means ANY two limbs are affected, but tends to be used in cases involving the two upper limbs or the upper limb on one side and the lower limb on the other.
