Symbolic Framework (Advanced) Flashcards
Name Weicks seven properties of sensemaking
It is based on identity, retrospective, enacted, social, constantly ongoing , based on cues, strives for plausibility over accuracy
What does it mean that sense-making is enacted
It is based on your own actions and related to your context
What does it mean that sense-making is retrospective
That people come up with solutions, observe phenomena and so on before they make sense of it through looking back at what it implies
How can management of meaning and identity benefit a business
By making your business support their sense-making of themselves, for example a careerist would feel at home in a place with an established corporate ladder while a person who sees themselves a curious can see themselves working at a place that offers education opportunities for their customers. Unprofitable projects can be highly valuable in the mind of employees if they feel that it makes the company a place where they want to work.
Name some cues that trigger sense making
A tuft of whit fuzz in the grass indicating that the neighbors cat is on the prow for example.
Explain Weicks pulsating organizational model
People gain different perspectives when labor is divided and people interact less this breaks down communities into conflict that leads to interaction and a new cultural cohesion until the cycle repeats itself.
Explain generic subjectivity and inter subjectivity
Generic subjectivity is when people is when people build a simplified understanding of each other due to limited interaction while inter subjectivity is the opposite, As I understood it at least
Why do very different companies often have very similar structures
Because they are all expressed to the same cultural expectations and institutional pressure
What is the the institutional and technical environment
The technical environment which concerns efficiency is the cause and effect results of how structures and implementations effect production. The institutional environment which concerns legitimacy is the social expectations of a firm regardless of their practical function. It is the dichotomy of these environments that leads to organizational hypocrisy.
Are social clubs signified by a strong technical or institutional environment
Neither according to the book but it depends on the case and the beholder
What is institutional isomorphism
Organizations withing an industry are remarkably similar despite facing differences in their technical environment
What are the three types/reasons for institutional isomorphism
coercive isomorphism (forced by outside), mimetic isomorphism (imitate competitors) and normative isomorphism (employees build what they know)
What is inverted isomorphism
When a company in a sector that is seen as outdated gains legitimacy by taking on a structure that resembles those in fields seen as more inovative
How do you create a dynamic change project
Create a definition vague enough to attract employees and make all stakeholders happy, recruit star members to decrease uncertainty and attract talent/attention regardless if the talent actually do things of substance, let group-think take hold to generate energy and let the people on the ground adapt to the circumstances as they see fit
What is post-heroic leadership
Leaders that just walk around and talk with the employees which is seen as extraordinary because of their status as leaders
