SWP Flashcards
All workers have the responsibility to what?
- Advise supervisor of any perceived risk
- Use PPE
- Understand and follow established safe work practices and procedures
- Inspect and report any defects
What is the CTK?
Composite tool kit system
What are some key things to be aware of when working with oxygen?
- Boom
- Only AVTECHs work with oxygen
- Oxygen tool kit is ONLY to be used on oxygen systems to keep the tools clean and free of debre
What is a key requirement for a multiple piece tool kit?
Each individual element needs to be serialised
E.g. All of the allan keys in a set of allan keys need to be individually serialised
What does a oxygen tool kit need to be fitted with in order to be operational?
Secured with a lock
What are the key roles of the CTK manager?
- Manage defective tools
- US tag and remove defected tools
Responsibility of personnel drawing and returning tools from the CTK?
- Tools must be serviceable, calibrated and appropriate for set taskings
- Report any defective tools to the CTK manager
Why is calibration important when relating to tools?
- Calibration is done to determine and document the difference in the reading given by the tool and compared with the reading given by the fixed measuring standard
- Calibration maintenance is conducted to establish a level of confidence in a specific item
What is a spanner?
A tool used to hold and secure the head of a bolt of nut
What is to be done when you identify a defective tool?
- Report to CTK manager
- US tag is to be placed in the defective tools place on the CTK
- US tool is not to go back on the CTK
Some types of spanners?
- Double open ended
- Ring spanner - single or double hex ring
- Combination spanner
- Flare nut spanner - crow foot shape - used for aircraft plumbing
What is a socket?
Tube shaped spanner
What is a speed brace?
A cranking handle that allows for high speed fastener rotation
What is another name for a hex key?
Allan key
What are hex keys made from?
Hardened tool steel
What is the definition of a hex key?
Hexagonal cross section and L shape with 1 long and 1 short leg
What is the definition of torque?
Torque is a measure of the force that can cause an object to rotate on an axis
What is a screw driver?
Hand held tool used to turn screws
What is another term for a ‘common screw driver’?
Flat head
Most commonly used hammer for metal work?
Ball peen hammer
What is used to clean a file?
File card
Important care for a file?
- Store away from other tools
- Store in a clean environment
Important thing to remember when replacing the blade on a hack saw?
Insert the blade into the frame with the teeth pointing AWAY from the HANDLE
What is another term used for mark out?
Lay out
Why is it important to lay out?
To provide lines to work to
What is the datum?
Fixed start point
No datum = accumulative error
Symbol - Triangle
Smallest distance from 1 line to the next on a micrometer?
0.50mm
Fundamental care for the vernier and micrometer?
- Jaws are to be cleaned
- Jaws are to be parallel when closed
- Confirm a reading of zero when closed
Important things to ensure / remember when using tools / machinery?
- Consider if you are trained and authorised to used the equipment
- PPE
What is of key importance when drilling or reaming?
Ensure your work is held FIRMLY by the vice, clamps or jigs when using the bench drill
What is of key importance when using the hand break / pan press?
- 75% of the feet are in place
- Ensure all personnel are cleared before moving anything
3 typed of clearance / fits?
- Transition fit
- Clearance fit
- Interference fit
What is a transition fit?
In between clearance and interference fit
What is a clearance fit?
- No friction
- Slides through
- Permits movement
What is an interference fit?
- Requires a force / press
- Does not permit movement
What is the hole basis chart used for?
- Gives accurate tolerances to apply to either the shaft or the hold to give the desired type of fit
What is an oil can?
Hand operated oil can with small mechanical pump which is operated by the thumb
Grease gun requires what?
Grease nipple
Types of cables?
- Non flexible - 1x7 - 1x19
- Flexible 7x7
- Extra flexible 7x19
Types of cable terminals?
- Eye splice
- Lap Splice
What is a pulley?
Has a grooved wheel around which a controlled cable passes
2 types of metal?
- Ferrous - Contains iron
- Non ferrous - Does not contain iron
What does the term hardness refer to?
Toughness
JUST REMEMBER
Chromium - Melybdenum steel (Chrome molly)
Metals generally used for high temp areas?
- Stainless steel
- Cres
Advantages to using aluminium?
- High strength to weight ratio
- Workable / ease of fabrication
- Can be hardened through treatment: Solution / Precipitation
- Can be softened through treatment: Annealing
What is annealing?
To soften or remove work hardened stress from heat treatment or cold working
What is hardening?
Is the process when a metal is heated to above the critical temperature then rapidly cooled
What is tempering?
A process generally applied to steel to relieve the strains induced during the hardening process
Most common metal test?
Bend test
Most common hardness test?
Brinell hardness test
Most common impact test?
Izod test - pendulum drop
2 types of plastic?
Thermoplastic - soften when heated and harden when cools
Thermosetting - cures with heat and permanently sets
What is the tensile test?
- Uses the known cross sectional area
- Gripped and stretched
Primary advantage of using composite metals?
- High strength
- Low weight
- Corrosion resistance
What does the dash symbol mean on a bolt?
Cres
What are the first 2 number in the part number of a bolt or screw?
Diameter and length
Where are 12 pointed washer head bolts generally used?
- High temp areas
- Also have high strength
What type of load does the clevis bolt need?
Shear load
What type of load does the eye bold need?
Tension load
When is internal wrenching generally used?
Used in special airframe application where sever loads are imposing on the structure
When are fillister head bolts generally used?
When the surface smoothness is not critical due to its curved head
