Q

What causes the salt in the water

A

the clearing of vegetation in agricultural areas. Mainly the deep rooted vegetation which uses up the salt. If they take this vegetation away the salt builds up in the water. They replace the deep rooted vegetation with small plants that need less water so the salt rises to the surface.
