3
Q

how do we collect and store water for our everyday use

A

Rainwater tanks
The rain that falls on the roof of a house normally
goes into stormwater drains and is wasted. This
rain can be collected and stored in tanks and
then used in the house

Q

How do we treat water so that we can use it?

A

Water for households is treated (purified) in a
water treatment plant. There are usually four steps
in the treatment process:
Step 1: The first step is to get rid of the
suspended materials. The easiest and
cheapest way to do this is to add a
chemical called alum to the water to
make these suspended particles clump
together.
Step 2: The clumped particles then settle out of
the water by themselves as a sludge. The
sludge is removed from the bottom of the
large settling tanks and used as landfill.
Step 3: The water is then filtered to remove any
suspended solids that are left.
Step 4: The water is finally disinfected using
chlorine to remove any harmful bacteria.

Q

Why is the water cycle important for us to manage?

A

All living things depend on water. Your body is
about 70% water—so an average person contains
about 45 litres of water. Fruit and vegetables
contain a larger percentage of water—a tomato is
93% water and an orange is 86% water. Without
water, living things cannot survive

Q

what is a non renewable resource

A

A nonrenewable resource is a resource that cannot be readily replaced by natural means quickly. Most fossil fuels, such as oil, natural gas and coal are considered nonrenewable resources as they take billions of years to form.

Q

what energy resources do we commonly use in society?

A
  1. fuel for transport and factories,
  2. electricity for homes and industries, comes from the fossil fuels coal, oil and gas.
    These are non-renewable resources.

16
Q

What resources do we get from plants?

A

They supply food,

  1. building material, wood for houses
  2. medicines, plants for healing
  3. wood is used for fuel for cooking and for warmth,
  4. fibres from plants for making clothes like cotton
17
Q

What resources do we get from forests

A
if we look after the plants and animal species that
live in the forests we will have:
1. timber for furniture and building.
2. make medicines and cosmetic oils
3. produce wood chip to make paper
18
Q

Metals can be reused over and over without
losing any of their properties. For this reason
they are ideal to recycle. What is recycled the most?

A

Aluminium is the world’s most recycled metal.
Using recycled aluminium is very kind to the
environment.

19
Q

Why do we recycle metals rather

than making new metals?

A

They need much less energy and they
produce far less CO2, and uses less than half
the water than is used making the metal from
its ore
