Q

What happens in the involuntary (pharynx) phase?

A

Q

What happens in the involuntary (oesophagus) stage?

A

Pharynx sequential contraction (circular muscles) up to upper oesophageal sphincter

Peristaltic waves along oesophagus to lower o sphincter

Q

What is the Gag reflex?

A

The reflex elevation of the pharynx often followed by vomiting caused by irritation of the oropharynx (back of the tongue)

17
Q

What nerves control the gag reflex?

A

Cranial nerves 9 and 10

Glossopharyngeal and Vagus

18
Q

What does cranial nerve 9 do?

A

‘Tickling’ sensory by glossopharyngeal

19
Q

What does cranial nerve 10 do?

A

‘Gagging’ motor by vagus

20
Q

What is the pathway of the gag reflex?

A

Sensory neurone (glossopharyngeal) —> reflex arc —> motor neurone (vagus)
