challenges of development
extreme cold temperatures

provision of buildings and infrastructure
what is the impact of extreme cold temps
increasing construction costs, agriculture is impossible so most of the food is imported - therefore increasing costs
impact of inaccessibility to areas
Travel is mostly by snowmobiles, boats, or planes, but harsh weather can disrupt these. - This isolation restricts trade, healthcare access, and overall economic growth.
mineral extraction (opportunity)
Svalbard has large coal reserves. coal mining was the largest economic activity on the island for years and currently provides over 300 jobs. however coal prices have reduced in recent years causing a decline in the industry causing a loss in jobs for many.
energy developments (opportunity)
due to coal operations soon ending, geothermal is on the rise. Svalbard may be able to harness energy in the future, but little research has gone into seeing if this is a sustainable source of energy.
Where is the coal fuelled power plant located in Svalbard
longyearbyen
tourism (opportunity)
extreme tourism has grown popular in recent years in svalbard. such as the northern lights and glacier walks. tourism provides over 300 jobs. 70000 people visited longyearbyen in 2011.
extreme temps (challenge)
temperature can fall as low as -30 Celsius and daylight hours are very short in winter. to go outside people have to wrap up in many layers making movement difficult, especially jobs that are labour intensive like construction
growing food is almost impossible also so most is imported
accessibility (challenge)
mountains, glaciers and lots of snow make development hard in many areas.
construction and infrastructure (challenge)
permafrost - the warning climate has caused the permafrost to thaw causing infrastructure to become unstable, many houses are slowly sinking into the waterlogged ground - causing damage
warming climate other issue other than construction
more avalanches - 10% of Longyearbyen’s populations have been forced to evacuate due to risk of avalanches
