natural hazards Flashcards
what is a natural hazard
natural process which could cause death or injury to humans.
what is a natural disaster
natty hazard that hasnt happened yet
2 types of natural hazards
geological - caused by land or tectonics - volcanoes and earthquakes
meteorological - weather and climate - tropical storms
factors affecting the hazard risk
vulnerability - more people in the area, higher chance they will be affected.
capacity to cope - the better a population can cope the lower the risk of them being severely affected. - hic
nature of natural hazard - type of natty hazard, frequency of them happening and magnitude of quakes
two examples of general primary and secondary effects
primary - buildings and roads destroyed - death and injury
secondary - other hazards like tsnuamis - blocked roads causes aid and emergency to get through causing more death
examples of immediate and long term responses
immediate - evacuate people - treat people - recover bodies to prevent disease - provide aid like food and clean water to reduce risk of water borne disease spreading
long term - repair homes and buildings - improve building regulations - improve evacuation plans
