erosion, transportation, deposition Flashcards
four processes of erosion
hydraulic action - force of river water colliding with rocks breaks rock particles away from the river channel
abrasion - eroded rocks picked up by the river scrape and rub against the channel, wearing it away.
attrition - eroded rocks picked up by the river crash into each other and break apart. there edges get rounded. causes particle size to decrease from source to mouth
solution - river water dissolves some types of rock like chalk
4 processes of transportation
traction - large particles pushed along the river bed by the force of water
saltation - pebble - sized particles are bounced along the river bed by the force of water
solution - soluble materials like limestone dissolve in the water and can be carried along
suspension - small particles like silt are carried along
deposition
occurs when river loses its velocity and energy
why do rivers slow down
volume of water falls
amount of eroded material increases
shallow water (inside of bend)
river reaches the mouth
smaller particles
deposited closer to mouth
what acronym to use to remember 4 processes of erosion on a river
haas (F1)
